Vera and Mike Simpson at Curraghmore Farm

Who We Are

Curraghmore Farm has been a labour of love since its inception in 1980. Starting out with little more than a dream, Vera Simpson and Michael Dubé set out to create something special; quite simply, a great place to raise champions. They set to work, pouring their hearts and souls into the project, not to mention countless hours of hard labour. Word spread quickly that Curraghmore did things differently and that horses here could be guaranteed the utmost in care. With their home only steps away from the foaling barn, Vera and Mike are inextricably connected to the workings of the farm; it is their life. In short order, young Vera established her lifelong connection with horses. To this day, her mother will tell you of the countless nickels spent operating mechanical horses in grocery stores. Eventually Mum and Dad bought the 12 year old a pony of her own, convinced that it would be a wiser investment in the long run. Since then she hasn’t turned back. Vera’s education in horsemanship was initially developed through the British Horse Society Pony Club. Even today, after years of veterinary (AAEP) conferences, equine nutrition courses, herd health clinics, and continual research, she still has an insatiable enthusiasm for acquiring knowledge. She remains aware of the newest technologies to ensure that all the horses under her care get the very best. This consistent education is complemented by Vera’s innate skill for assessing horse wellness. These two qualities are essential to her success as a herdsman in raising strong, healthy athletes. In addition, Vera is a respected member of the horse racing community within Canada. She has been a member of the Canadian Thoroughbred Horse Society since 1980, holding various positions on the board, including 14 years as provincial director, with terms as provincial vice-president and national director. She was invited to participate in the initial meetings of the Ontario Horse Racing Industry Association, playing a role in streamlining the province’s racing industry. Vera also served as a representative on Equine Canada, acting as a trusted voice for the Thoroughbred community.

Mike dedicates every day to improving and maintaining Curraghmore Farm. As a young man he apprenticed with his father as a pipe-organ builder until 1986, when he chose to leave that profession to focus on the farm. Mike’s skilled, hands-on experience in the woodworking trade has made him extremely aware of the importance of small details and he insists on getting things done the right way. He is a natural with tools and concentrates on building maintenance and construction. But, he is also the essential asset when it comes to handling horses. Mike’s calm, steady disposition and his strength and determination makes him adept at handling even the most challenging of horses, particularly the youngsters and stallions.
